GARDENS OF THE ISLAND BELLA, GULF BORROMEO, LAKE MAGGIORE

ISOLA BELLA

The most popular and well-known of the Borromeo Islands, its ornate palace and gardens occupying three quarters of the island, was originally nothing more than a large rocky reef and home to a few modest fishermen’s dwellings at the beginning of the sixteenth century. A few decades later, the Borromeo family, already owners of Isola Madre, began buying up property on the small island and in the early 1600s initiated the remarkable engineering feat of transforming it into a magnificent baroque complex; building of the magnificent residence and surrounding gardens was begun in the following years. This unique “Garden Island” comprises ten stepped terraces rising up from the water to form a truncated pyramid and is one of the most famous and best preserved of the Italian baroque gardens; its spectacular fountains, rare and exotic plants and striking architectural perspectives never failing to impress and enchant visitors from every corner of the globe.
